Palace of Arts Naples
The building that houses the PAN, the former residence of country of Francesco di Sangro, Prince of San Severo, was in 1667 he donated to the generator, Don Giuseppe Carafa.
In 1717 the "house palaces" with its gardens and land is transferred to ten thousand ducats to Hippolyte Cantelmo Stuart, wife of Vincenzo Maria Carafa, V Prince of Roccella.
Shall instruct the woman to Luca Vecchioni, to renovate the building. The extension works will last about ten years, from 1755 to 1765, after the work the building turns out to be an actual residential building.
The design of Vecchioni, inspired Vanvitelli, is marked by criteria greater symmetry, with use of roof construction side as the first floor terrace.
Between 1765 and 1829 is completed on the second floor and the construction of the third.
In 1885 the opening of the new street of Via dei Mille bisects the building, destroying the covered atrium.
Between 1950 and 1959, what is left of the original "Garden of Delights" attached to the building is permanently destroyed.
In February 1998 the City of Naples - which in 1984 had acquired property and then started the restoration - establishes the intended use of Palazzo Roccella at the Documentation Center for Contemporary Arts.
In his new role, the palace today - with its 6,000 sq m distributed three floors.
Many are temporary exhibitions, cultural workshops, a documentation center, a library and a media library.
